Read a receipt photo, then make yourself check the numbers
A crumpled till roll is not a spreadsheet. People photograph it, squint, and mistype 45.00 as 4500. Sending that photo to a “smart expense” app also sends the card last-four and the shop. You need the text on this device, a guess at merchant and total, and a lock that refuses to export until you have looked. Currency conversion would be a lie without a rate you chose; copying the printed symbol is enough.
Why this is worth doing in the browser
DevNestro’s Receipt & Invoice Extractor reuses the existing Tesseract.js OCR service. Drop a JPG, PNG, or WebP. The page shows the raw text and fills merchant, date, currency as printed, subtotal, tax, total, and line items when those patterns appear. You edit every box. Download CSV uses the shared formula guard. XLSX lazy-loads the same SheetJS build as Data Cleaner and Home Inventory. JSON is a backup of what you approved. The review checkbox is required. There is no currency API and no claim that the extract matches the merchant’s books. Related OCR is the general text tool. Related Expense Splitter is for splitting a bill you already trust. Related Document Scanner can straighten a skewed photo first.
How to use the tool
Photograph or drop the receipt, wait for text, correct the fields and lines, tick the review box, then download CSV, XLSX, or JSON. Re-parse from the raw text if you edit that box. Do not treat the file as an official invoice.
- Straighten a badly angled photo in Document Scanner first if the text is unreadable.
- Check the total against the paper, not only the guess.
- Leave currency as printed. Do not invent a conversion.
- Keep the paper until you are sure the export is right.
Privacy
The photo and text stay in this browser. They are not uploaded to DevNestro. A language pack may download on first OCR use. Analytics may record that a read ran, not the receipt contents.
Have a till photo to turn into a table you still check? Open the receipt extractor, review the fields, and download CSV or JSON.
