Reference exchange rates vs what your bank pays

A currency converter answers “about how many units?” It does not answer “what will hit my account after the bank’s spread, weekend pricing, and fees?” Treating a reference rate as a guaranteed payout is how travel budgets and invoice quotes go wrong. This guide separates reference data from commercial rates.

The problem

Apps show clean numbers. Banks sell FX. The gap is the business model: spreads on cards, worse cash rates at kiosks, transfer fees, and sometimes dynamic currency conversion at the terminal. A mid-market or ECB-style reference rate is a public benchmark, not your merchant’s price. Screenshots of converter results are not contracts.

How it works

Use a converter to estimate and to sanity-check orders of magnitude. For money that moves, read your bank, card, or remittance provider’s rate and fee schedule at the time of the trade. Prefer converters that document their data source. On DevNestro, Currency Converter uses Frankfurter for reference rates: only currency codes and requested ranges are sent to that provider; amounts stay in the page session. Do not paste account numbers into a converter — they are not required.

Practical steps

  1. Estimate with a reference converter, then add a buffer for spread and fees.
  2. For invoices, state the currency clearly and note that FX may move before payment clears.
  3. At the point of sale, decline dynamic conversion when your card’s network rate is better — when you know how to compare.
  4. Recheck rates on the day you actually transfer; do not reuse a week-old screenshot.
  5. Never treat a web tool as regulated financial advice.

Privacy and trust

DevNestro’s Currency Converter sends currency codes and rate-range requests to Frankfurter; it does not need financial account data. Amounts remain in the browser session and are not stored as a DevNestro ledger.

Pitfalls

Weekend and holiday gaps can freeze or stale some feeds. Cryptocurrency pairs are a different market. Offline screenshots go stale. Rounding in retail FX can dominate tiny tourist purchases. Do not enter card PANs or passwords into any converter page.

Questions people ask

Why is my bank’s rate worse than the converter?

Because the bank sells you FX with a spread and often fees. The converter shows a reference mid-market style rate, not their sell price.

Is Frankfurter the same as my ATM rate?

No. It is a public reference feed used for estimation. ATM and card networks price differently.

Can I rely on this for accounting?

Use your accountant’s or regulator’s prescribed rate source for books. A web converter is for rough planning.

Does DevNestro store my amounts?

Amounts stay in the page session for the converter; they are not kept as account history.

Estimate with reference rates, pay with your provider’s quote. Open Currency Converter for a ballpark — then check the bank.
