Hear a word on your device with open phonetic hints
Pronunciation help should separate sound from authority. DevNestro’s Pronunciation Helper speaks with the browser’s SpeechSynthesis voices on your device, optionally shows phonetic text from open dictionary data, and offers a syllable estimate that is openly heuristic. Longer reading aloud still belongs on Text to Speech.
Why this is worth doing in the browser
Sites that autoplay scraped commercial audio without rights create both legal and quality problems. Shipping a huge proprietary pronunciation database is unnecessary when the browser already speaks and open APIs sometimes include phonetic strings or audio URLs.
How to use the tool
Look up a word for IPA when available, press Speak for a local voice, and open dictionary audio only if you accept a third-party media host. Use Gemini Text to Speech only when you deliberately want cloud voices.
- Look up the spelling you intend to say.
- Listen once, then adjust browser voice settings if the default accent is wrong for your audience.
- Treat syllable splits as a learning aid, not a dictionary syllabification proof.
- Move long scripts to Text to Speech instead of this single-word helper.
Privacy
SpeechSynthesis runs locally. Phonetic lookup may call the open dictionary API from the server. Spoken words are not logged as analytics content.
Need a quick hear-it-now pass? Open Pronunciation Helper and keep speech on the device when you can.
