Shrink a PDF without guessing the size first

Email gateways and ticket systems still choke on camera-heavy PDFs. Online “compressors” that upload the packet to a third party copy every page you meant to keep private. A browser tool that recompresses embedded images where it can, strips safe metadata, and only reports sizes after a real pass is how you reduce megabytes without inventing a fake percentage up front.

Why this is worth doing in the browser

DevNestro’s Compress PDF extends the shared pdf-tools client. Recommended and Best Quality try to keep text and vectors while downscaling and recompressing JPEG-compatible embedded images and clearing info dictionary fields. Maximum Compression is an explicit rasterize path: each page is redrawn as a JPEG and rebuilt into a new PDF, with a clear warning that it may reduce text and search quality. Size cards for original, compressed, and saved amount stay hidden until Compress finishes. Encrypted PDFs are rejected like other client PDF tools.

How to use the tool

Drop a PDF, pick a mode, read the Maximum Compression warning if you select it, press Compress, review the size stats, then download. Start Over clears the session file. Related Merge and Split help reshape packets; Watermark marks drafts before you shrink them.

  1. Do not trust a size claim that appears before processing.
  2. Use Maximum Compression only when searchable text is expendable.
  3. Keep the original until you confirm the download opens.
  4. Password-protected PDFs need Protect or Unlock workflows first.

Privacy

Compression runs in your browser. PDFs are not uploaded to DevNestro for this tool.

PDF too heavy for email? Open Compress PDF, pick a mode, and download only after the savings show.
